DEDICATORY PRAYER
FOR THE ROMRELL MONUMENT

August 14, 1999
given by Keith Hardy

Our Heavenly Father, we are gathered here today as descendants and family of Francis & Mary, George & Patience Romrell to dedicate this monument to their memory. We bow before Thee in deep gratitude for them and the heritage they left us. Though most of us here never knew them, we feel, as we read histories written of their lives, a sense of gratitude for what they mean to us who live now, and will mean to generations unborn.

One hundred fifty years ago this month a change came into the life of Francis Romrell that not only changed his life but the lives of each of us present today. He was baptized and became the first of our Romrell progenitors to belong to Thy kingdom since the restoration of the gospel.

We are thankful that he recognized the truth of the gospel message and in spite of considerable opposition accepted membership in Thy church. We are also grateful to those faithful missionaries for seeking out Francis and bringing him the message of the restoration. We are humbled by the fact that one of those missionaries later became Thy holy prophet. We thank Thee for the gospel and the Savior's great love for us expressed in His willingness to suffer for our sins and to die for us.

We thank Thee for the steadfastness, the pioneer spirit, the sacrifice and the great faith of our ancestors. We thank Thee that their faith and willingness to heed the call to come to Zion brought George and Patience to this place to build a home for their family. We appreciate their desire to build not only for themselves but for others and especially for us who followed. We are grateful for their labors in clearing the land for planting and for seeing the possibilities in being the first to bring fruit trees and berries to the Ogden area. They were able to add variety to the necessities of life and also an opportunity to provide income for their family. We are grateful for George's ingenuity in making the first mill rollers from maple trees he harvested from the nearby mountains. He built the mill to process molasses from sugar cane and was able to supply others with his product. We thank Thee for the strong and valiant women who labored beside their husbands in the accomplishment of much good.

We are grateful for their contributions to the building up of this area and grateful for their contributions to who we are today. We have been blessed with a noble heritage of which we may well be proud. May each of us have the faith and courage of our ancestors and leave a like legacy for our own posterity. With the crumbling morals of our society today we can well be pioneers in leading our families out of this chaos with exemplary lives and unshakeable standards of honor and integrity. We owe no less than this to Francis, Mary, George and Patience.

We now dedicate this monument to their memory. We are thankful to those who have led the way in establishing it and to the Ogden City officials who allowed us to use this spot to honor our ancestors. We leave here but a piece of stone but it represents our love, honor and respect for those who were pioneers and blazed the high trail for us. May this place, this monument, be a symbol of what they did for us and a symbol of our love for them, we humbly pray in the name of Jesus Christ, amen.
