NOTE: the place names of Five Points, Bingham's Fort, and Lynne or Lynne Ward, are all names for the same place which today is part of the City of Ogden not North Ogden. The settlement dates to I1849 and was first called Five Points because five roads converged in the area. In the fall of 1853, when a fort was constructed for protection against Indians, it became known as Bingham's Fort in honor of Bishop Erastus Bingham. During thi Is period the Saints there were presided over by Thomas Richardson of Slaterville. In 1863 Lynne, a branch or district of the Weber Stake, was organized and on 28 May 1877 a regular Bishop's ward was organized. Later the area was incorporated I into the City of Ogden and is now known as Five Points. --Isabell Oleson Stringham 2. Hatch and edited by Owen A Romrell It was on the Isle of Jersey that my great-great grandfather, Francois Romeril was born the son of Jeanne Hutton who was born in 17 Dec 1775 at St. John, Island of Jersey and Francois Romeril a sea cJH@Iaptain. He made many voyages and was Presumed drowned about the year 1799. Jeanne gave birth to a lovely son whom she named Francois born August 13, 1799. This son grew up on the Island and in the year Dec 16, 1826 marred Mary Billott of TKI@Irinity, Jersey. She was born April 18, 1801. They were very happy and became the parents of eleven children, The father worked at shoemaking while his wife worked in a store with a bakery department. She was noted for the good butter she made.LJ@I The family was quite religious and belonged to the Methodist Church. However, when they heard the gospel they became true believers and joined the Latter-day Saints Church in 1849. They were of the true blood of Isriel. Elder Dunber FomMK@Irax and John Taylor who afterward became President of the Church converted them. As in many other places the people were prejudiced against the Latter Day Saints and Elder John Taylor was imprisoned in France. It was through the influence and NL@Icollection of a large amount of money by Mary Romrell our great grandmother that he was released. He was very friendly with my great grandfather's family and made his home with them while there. My grandfather, George Romrell was born OctoOM@Iber 14,1832 at St. John, Isle of Jersey. He was the fourth child of a family of eleven children, five boys and six girls. His early childhood was much the same as many other small boys. He would go to the beach with his sisters to gather oystePN@Irs where the tide had washed them They put them in large baskets and carried them home. He had little chance for education. He sometimes attended English and sometimes French schools. Because of poor financial circumstances of the family QO@Ihe had to quit school and go to work. He learned the shoemaker and ship carpenter tmde, also he learned to fish and gather oysters with a net.The oysters were gathered in the wintertime by going out and dragging the ocean bottom with nets. WheRP@In the fishing boat was full they took them to shore and there the oysters were sorted, the largest being the size of a saucer. The largest were sold to homefolk and the smaller to foreign trade. George Romrell at the age of sixteen was BaptSQ@Iized Aug 26 1849 a member of the LDS church being converted by Elders Ounber Fomax and John Taylor. Elder Richard Treasder baptized him in the ocean. The baptism was at night and only a few prejudiced onlookers stood on the shore.. When GeorgTR@Ie came up out of the Water afler emersion a stone thrown by somoone on the shore hit him in his eye. It hurt dreadfully and Georse saw a streak of light then darkness. The next day his eye did not hurt and was not swollen. his eyesight being rUS@Iestoerd to normal. The incident was alwas a source of testimony to George for he felt sure that if the power from heaven had not blessed him he would have lost sight of his eye. On Feb 28 185I George left Liverpool England on the Ship OlympVT@Ius for America. Francis and most of the rest of his family left the Isle of Jersey Mar 29 1855 saling on the ship Chimborazo. to the new land. It was a long and perilous voyage but the protecting hand of God was over them. They arrived in AmeWU@Irica and after traveling to St. Louis the family with the exception of George. secured wagons and supplies and came to the to the promised land to be with the saints. George staid in St. Louis for about ten years working at the ship carpentXV@Iers shop and becoming quite effieienl. Here he met and married Mary Ann Poner and two little girls were born to them. One died in infance. The wife did not belong to the chun:h and refused to join and come west with him. In 1861 George madeYW@I preparatIons to go to Zion. Hle put his supplies in a wagon drawn by two oxen. and joined the George Harper Company which was coming 10 Litah. His wife and chiId remained in St. Louis. Near the end of the summer the George Harper Company oZX@Ivertook (;aptajn Ira Ejdredge Ox Train on lhe way t0 Utah. Patieince Swingewood was a member of this Compan. Thier first home was a dugout with a quilt over the door and a sack[@I used at the window. True to pioneer tradition.^DIMary Ann Porter was born approximately 1830-31 in Bradford, Yorkshire, England. She emigrated to America around 1850 and went to St. Louis, Missouri. While there, (approx. 1851) she met and married George Romrell, (born 14 Oct. 1832) a young e_]DImigrant from Jersey Island. George was a newly baptized member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He was on his way to Utah, but had determined to stop in St. Louis and work for a few years to earn enough money to continue We`^DIst and begin a life in the Utah Territory. George had been trained as a soldier and apprenticed as a ship's carpenter in his native Jersey. He continued in the carpentry trade in St. Louis. In 1852 a baby girl was born to Mary Ann and George a_DIwhom they named Anna Mary. Sadly, she died shortly after her birth. On July 1, 1859 a second daughter was born. She was named Sarah Ann. For the next few years Mary Ann and George apparently raised their daughter and worked. Little is known abb`DIout this time. Finally in 1861, George determined it was time to continue his journey to Utah and join the Saints and rest of his family who had settled in the Ogden Valley. Mary Ann had no interest in joining the Mormon church and refused tocaDI come west with George, so they parted ways. Various histories indicate that Mary Ann went to the mining camps, however, little is actually known. Our information is sketchy as to what happened to Sarah Ann at this time. It seems she did not gdbDIo with her mother. Perhaps she stayed with friends in St. Louis for a few years until George, having settled on a homestead in Ogden, Utah and remarried to Patience Swingewood, went back to get Sarah Ann and bring her to Utah. Sarah Ann lived ecDIwith her father and half- brothers and sisters for several years and became quite attached to them. She continued to correspond with some of them for some years after she married and left. In July 1874 she married a man by the name of George fdDIWashington Marshall who was a teamster. George Marshall was born in Illinois in 1835. George was twenty years older than Sarah Ann. Together they headed for Nevada where George would find work. The following year, 1875, on June 7 a daughter wgeDIas born to them whom they named Belle at Fallon, Nevada. The family continued to grow and on 27 November 187(2) (6) a second daughter was born named Lucinda in Willow Creek, Nevada. Another child, a son, George Washington Marshall (Jr.) was bhfDIorn to them while in Nevada on 10 September 1879. News of the discovery of gold began to filter down from Montana country so George and Sarah Ann took their little family and headed to Virginia City, Montana where George found work freightingigDI supplies to the mining camps and also to the army garrison stationed in Yellowstone. George and Sarah soon saw the need of a hotel in the Yellowstone area and moved their small family their in the winter of 1880-81 while building the hotel. AjhDI fourth child was born on January 31, 1881, whom they named Rosa (Rose) Park. Rose was their first white child to be born in Yellowstone Park. They ran the hotel for eleven years, then sold it and built a home on the Upper Madison River, the skiDIite of which is now under Hebgen Lake. Two more sons were born to Sarah Ann and George Marshall. Walter was born in October 1885 and Frank R. in August 1889, both born in Montana, probably Virginia City. While in Yellowstone, George Marshall ljDIwas badly injured in an accident when his horses were startled by a bear. He never fully recovered from this accident. The family then moved to Bozeman. In the history of Fred Romrell, son of George and half sister to Sarah, Fred mentions thamkDIt while on his mission to Montana in about 1900, he met Sarah. "He had not seen her for twenty years nor heard from her for at least twelve years. She was greatly surprised to see him and glad to hear how her father was getting along. She nevenlDIr joined the church nor did she want to discuss it. He was invited to their home for dinner a number of times and was treated very well."(History of Alfred Romrell p.11). Sarah worked as nurse in the Headwaters area for several years. They buomDIilt a home in Belgrade, Montana. She and her husband often stayed with their daughter, Lucinda and her husband. George Washington Marshall gained the nickname "Elk" Marshall because he raised many elk on his land as well as other stock. GeorgepnDI was a pioneer of the Upper Madison River area. He died in Belgrade, Montana in 1918. Sarah Ann continued to live in Belgrade until her death sometime after 1921 in Three Forks, Montana. Now, to the next generation. Belle, the oldest daughterqoDI went to college in Bozeman and apparently never married. No information has been found about her from that point. The three Marshall sons farmed and ranched in Montana. George farmed and raised cattle in Horseshoe Hills above Menard, Montana.rpDI He married and had one son also named George. Walter farmed near Toston and Frank was a cattle dealer in Three Forks before World War I. He often made his home with his sister Lucinda and her family. In the 1910 Census he was found living witsqDIh them. Rose married a man named Jack McCall and apparently settled in Montana. Lucinda, the second daughter, had always loved to draw whenever she could get crayons or watercolors and paper. As she grew up she never lost that love. As a yountrDIg girl she worked in the Canyon Hotel and the Old Faithful Hotel to earn money for her education. One spring some of the carpenters at the hotel gave her $1.00 each to help with her education. Lucinda and Bell attended Bozeman College and LuciusDInda was able to continue at the Art Institute of Chicago. When she returned home she gave art lessons and taught art classes. She also painted pictures for the tourist trade. Lucinda married Antrim Earl Barnes who was a railroad engineer AuguvtDIst 17, 1907. They settled in Livingston and later Three Forks. They became well-known and respected citizens of the county. They were Masons and were active in that organization. She was active in many community activities. She died at the homwuDIe of her daughter June 13, 1944 and is buried at Rogersville, Pa. Lucinda and Antrim had two children, Antrim Barnes (III) and Lucy Marshall Barnes (born 17 August 1907 in Lewistown, Montana). Antrim lived most of his life around the HeadwatexvDIrs area. He received his BA in Education at Dillon and his Master's from Missoula State University. He married Sigrid Bortvedt on 27 December 1941. They had two children, Patricia Barney and Charles Marshall Barnes. Antrim was a teacher most oywDIf his life and also ran a tackle shop and guide service in Yellowstone for several years. He eventually sold the shop and moved to Helena. He died in 1952 and is buried in Bozeman, MT. Lucy Marshall Barnes married Edward S. Lemmon of PennsylvzxDIania on 18 June 1931. They settled in Cleveland, Ohio for a time where they had two daughters Sarah Ann (Magnotti) and Kaye Schultz, who are both currently residents of that state. During World War II Lucy taught home nursing classes for the A{yDImerican Red Cross and was a school nurse in Waynesburg, PA. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Waynesburg. Lucy Marshall Barnes Lemmon died April 13, 1998 in Waynesburg, Pennsylvania. Hatch “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart, and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” ProverbEIs 3:5 Patience was born September 29, 1841 in Stowerbridge, Brierly Hill Worchestershire, England. Her parents were John Swingewood and Jamima Baker. Her Father joined the church in September 1846, her mother having been baptized in JEIuly of the same year, at this time Patience was only 4 years old. Four years later (1850), her father, in company with several brethren of the branch, left England for Salt Lake City. His intentions were to earn money and to send for his familEIy the following year. Due to higher wages in America it became a custom among the brethren to come to America to earn Immigration money to send for their families. The ocean voyage required nine weeks on the water, and John SEIwingewood and company arrived in St. Louis, March 24, 1850. He found work and wrote his wife to prepare all she could for the journey to Zion as he expected soon to have enough money to send for them. He, however, was taken sick of cholera andEI died June 17, 1850, about three months after his arrival. This left his widow with five small children to support. The youngest child was born one month after he died. Soon the widow married William Rowley. He would not supEIport her children nor did he join the church. This left Patience at the age of eight years to make her won way in the world. She had no more schooling and heard little of the gospel. She found employment where she earned a sixpence a week withEI which she bought her clothing. She stayed nine months at one place. Her mother would sometimes write a letter to her, this she would reread many times and at night by a dim candle light she would trace and copy the words until the paper was wEIorn out. Her powers of observation were keen. She watched closely how her different mistresses made their clothes. When about twelve years old some old clothes were given her. These things did not fit Patience and showed wear. She washed aEInd dyed the dress and remade it to fit her. She washed the ribbons from the hat and made a new flower for it. When she showed her mistress the hat and dress like new, she exclaimed, “Where did you learn to do such things? Where did you get sEIuch ideas?” Patience explained it was her first experience at sewing At one time Patience was working eight miles from her mothers house. She hadn’t seen her mother for nearly a year and was very homesick. She had to workEI all day and had no spare time only at night. One evening after her work was done she left to see her mother. She walked or rather ran the whole distance. She dared not go in this time of night as it would cause trouble with her step-father, sEIo she merely looked at her mother a few minutes through the window and then started back. She met two drunken men on her way back but was not afraid. It was almost morning when she reached her place of work again. Another time, the lady foEIr whom she was working had to go away on the day she had planned to make her month’s supply of bread. She had her yeast already. When she left, Patience made and baked the bread in the huge oven outside. When the mistress returned, she said,EI “Where on earth did you learn to make bread, it all looks so good.” Patience answered with a smile, “It is my first bread, I learned from watching you.” “You will make the bread from now on, it is better than mine.” She workedEI very hard and continued to support herself. In her leisure time she knit stockings for the family By the time she was nineteen she had saved enough, after paying tithing, from her small earnings to immigrate to New York. After her fare was paEIid she had on shilling and one sixpence left. Everyone had to furnish their own food on the boat. Aboard the Clipper Ship, Underwriter, a sailing vessel, there were six hundred twenty-four which left Liverpool, England, April 23, 1861 and EIarrived in New York, May 2, 1861. Upon her arrival in New York she stayed at Castle Gardens. The next day they went up the river. Those who did not have any means to continue the journey had to take their baggage off the boat. She had only monEIey enough to cross the water. That was a day she would always remember. She had left all for the Gospel’s sake and had prayed earnestly to the Lord to open the way for her that she might go on with the saints. It must have taken a courageousEI heart to face such a moment. She had spent eleven long years of hardship and service preparing to come to America. It appeared now that she would not be able to continue on to Zion. Men with teams met the boat, to take those who were not EIgoing to Utah wherever they wished to go. When the last team was ready to leave there was nothing for Patience to do but go with them to New Jersey. The rest of the company were to take the train from this point, to Florence, Nebraska. WheEIn the brethren arrived at the railroad station the captain missed Patience. No one seemed to know where she was. At last they found a man who said she had gone to New Jersey. Someone was sent in a great hurry to get her. When he found her he sEIaid, “You must come quickly or you will miss the train.” The captain scolded, “You have a ministering angel, I’ll take you money or no money.” Patience was very happy and she boarded the train after it had already started to move EI There were seventeen people in the wagon to which Patience was assigned, including two women who were ill. One of them was so sick it was thought she would die on the plains, but she improved during the last part of the journey. PaEItience waited on the sick women, fixed their food and washed their clothes and did all she could to help them. They had no soap or tub for washing but took the clothes to the river and rubbed them with sand. Patience put her bundles of cloEIthing and food, mostly bacon, flour and salt in a wagon with the others. Day after day she walked with the girls ahead of the wagon train. Her shoes gave out and she walked bare foot, leaving blood stains on the trail. Summer days were hot andEI water and food were scarce, often they traveled thirty miles in a day without water. Up with the dawn, prayers and breakfast over they would be on their way at sunrise. They stopped only a short hour for rest and mid-day meal, continuing on uEIntil sundown when dusk would overtake them. Then the wagons would form a circle inside of which were the cattle and horses. On the outside fires were built of sage brush or buffalo chips which the girls and children gathered. They saw many herEIds of buffalo and occasionally one would be killed providing them with fresh meat, a welcome diversion to their meager diet. After the scanty evening meal two or three men would be appointed guards and would serve until midnight when others woEIuld take their place One day Patience was riding in the wagon and not wishing to stop the train she jumped out as they often did while the caravan was moving along. In doing so her dress caught on a nail and threw her body. With EIa prayer in her heart she quickly drew herself under the wagon to avoid the second wheel passing over her. She sprang to her feet and out of the way of the next wagon. The wagon was heavily loaded with baggage of seventeen people and it was miEIraculous that no bones were broken. The whole train stopped and crowds gathered thinking she must be hurt, but she declared she was not and continued to walk Near the end of the Journey they were overtaken by another company of SaEIints under the Supervision of George Harper. The two companies joined and came into Salt Lake Valley together. In this company was a young man, George Romrell. Patience and George soon became good friends. George was straight and tall and EIbroad shouldered with black hair and dark eyes. Patience with her sunny smile, friendly manner, blue eyes and long, wavy chestnut hair (which she wore fastened with a loose net she had crocheted) was an attraction to anyone, most of all GeorgeEI. Often a lock of her hair would fall through the net and drop to her waist in a ringlet. George often tried to induce Patience to ride with him. Sometimes she would but more often she walked. Just before they reached Salt Late Valley GeorEIge asked Patience to go to Ogden with him and she promised she would. The two young hearts had found companionship and love. They were married September 28, 1861 in Bingham Fort, Ogden, Utah the day before Patience was twenty years old. EI Patience had many faith promoting experiences. She and George raised a large family and were faithful to the Lord and their family all their lives. Patience Swingewood ROMRELL, EIGEORGE (son of Francis Romrell and Mary Billot). Editor Junction: Sir-- In your issue of WedXInesday last appeared a notice of the death of my father, Francis Romriel, and a statement that he was born in the year 1779, which is a mistake, and should read 1799, making him 76 years old at the time of his death, and although he had livXIed more years than "three score and ten," I hardly think old age was the cause of his death. If he was drowned at the time of the childXI's birth, she (Jeanne Hotton) could not have sued him for maintaince as she did with Jean Le Brun in 1795. Her 'tutrice'[guardian] Marie Hooton brought Le Brun to court (he was brought actually 'in chains', being 'dangerous') and he was ordXIered to pay 20 sous per week until the child reached the age of 7. Neither are we likely to find Francois inheriting anything, being illegitimate, so the Land Registry is not likely to reveal anything to us. The evidence points to FrancoiXIs bap. 1779 being the father as I was saying in my last letter, but as for actual proof, we may never find it." !NOTE: the place names of Five Points, Bingham's Fort, and Lynne, are all names for the same place which today is part of theXI City of Ogden not North Ogden. The settlement dates to 1849 and was first called Five Points because five roads converged in the area. In the fall of 1853, when a fort was constructed for protection against Indians, it became known as BinXIgham's Fort in honor of Bishop Erastus Bingham. During this period the Saints there were presided over by Thomas Richardson of Slaterville. In 1863 Lynne, a branch or district of the Weber Stake, was organized and on 28 May 1877 a regularXI Bishop's ward was organ- ized. Later the area was incorporated into the City of Ogden and is now known as Five Points.YI Mary Billot was born 18 apr 1801 and christened April 29, 1804 at Trinity, Jersey, Channel Islands, England. Her parents were Joshua Billot and Elizabeth Adeline Gibault (Gibot). Little is recorded of Mary's history, but her parents ownYIed a large shoe establishment and built a beautiful house near Ebinizer Chappel in Trinity. They were classed among the gentry of the Island. Mary's father, Joshua Billot was a widower with one son when he married Elizabeth Gibot He was twelveYI years older than she. They had seven children. Mary Billot married Francis Romriell about the year 1820. He had been bound to his stepfather as a shoemaker apprentice. Because of his lowly position, the Billots did not approve of the marYIriage of Mary and Francis. Mary and Francis had eleven children. This was also an annoyance to Mary's society family. Upon one occasion the Billots were to entertain at a splendid affair on Christmas. All the family were to be present. SoYIphie and Nancy, Mary's sisters, feared that Mary's children might embarrass them before their fine guests and suggested that the children eat in the kitchen with the servants. Mary said if they were sent to the kitchen she would go with them. YIThe children did not go to the kitchen and later, when relating incidents in Jersey, were fond of telling of this grand affair. After joining the Mormon Church, the Romriell family found themselves forsaken by their friends and neighbors; YIthe children were looked down upon at school. When Andrew Lamoreaux led a group of Saints to Utah, they went with him to Liverpool and on to St Louis. Captain Lamoreaux died there on June 13, 1855 and they continued on with C. A. Harper. YIIn Utah they settled in Bingham's Fort in the Ogden area. Francis continued his occupation as a shoemaker. In the book "Beneath Ben Lomand Peaks", it states that Mary was appointed and served as a mid-wife in the Harrisville area. Mary died MaYIy 11, 1866 just eleven years after entering the valley. She was buried in the City Cemetery in Ogden in the "Pierce" section. (her daughter Jane married George Pierce.) Francis died October 9, 1875 and was buried next to his wife. (FranciYIs received his endowments in the Endowment House June 19, 1871, the same day his daughter, Jane, did. Though Mary was dead, she was sealed to Francis at that time. Her endowments were done in the Logan Temple April 25, 1889) Fred Romrell,YI son of George Romrell, told the following. Fannie and Lizzie went to Weber Academy. A professor there looked at their names and said why don't you change Romriell to a more English name. They dropped the "i" and made it Romrell. 1. Buried YIin Ogden City Cemetery. 2.
